To become a Canadian citizen and obtain the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship, you must meet certain criteria:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada for at least 3 of the last 5 years
- Have filed your income tax return, if you were required to do so
- Have met the language requirements (level 4 in English or French)
- Have passed the citizenship test (if not exempt)
- Have taken the oath of citizenship
